PolyData Update: PolyData (Data Warehouse) Client Encryption Project

To: PolyData Service Admins, LAN Coordinators
Sent: Thursday, December 16, 2011

The Database Administrators have begun Phase 1 of the Data Warehouse Database Encryption project, which involves implementing, but not requiring, encrypted connections.  Currently,  the DEV and TST Data Warehouse servers are set to request encrypted connections.

Phase 2 of this project will require that you access the Data Warehouse using encrypted connections.  Phase 2 will begin when we have confirmed that Oracle clients accessing a given Data Warehouse environment have been configured to encrypt connections.

Currently the DEV Data Warehouse server is scheduled to *require* encrypted connections on 1/4/2012,
and the TST Data Warehouse server is scheduled to *require* encrypted connections on 1/11/2012.

This will affect everyone who directly connects (not through PolyData Dashboards) to the PolyData Data Warehouse in any environment.

Instructions have been published on the PolyData website detailing how to:
     1) Obtain or upgrade an Oracle client (PDF),
     2) Configure encrypted database connections (PDF), and
     3) Verify that your connection is encrypted (PDF) ('Testing database encryption').

Please follow these instructions for set up and testing at your earliest convenience, and contact Tom Crabaugh on the DBA team (by phone 756-7671 or email to dbaadmin@calpoly.edu) if you have any issues or questions.  Please keep in mind that if you are running multiple Oracle clients, you may need to follow these steps for each client.
